October is BC Wine Harvest Month, and driving the Okanagan backroads at this time of year always fills me with nostalgia. Growing up among these vineyards and watching the BC wine industry flourish makes me proud to call this place home.
Harvest is when grapes are picked at peak ripeness—the payoff after months of hard work. In my experience, there’s nothing quite like discovering a favourite BC wine and then visiting the vineyard where it was made and meeting the people behind it.
Although I often mention the Okanagan, British Columbia actually has nine distinct wine-growing regions—from Vancouver Island to the Shuswap—and they’re all in harvest mode right now. This year we’ve explored our own backyard more than ever, and I’m grateful for this beautiful province and the families who live here. Knowing the dedication poured into agriculture, I try to support local farmers and the products they create. Thankfully, BC wine is exceptional, and exploring wine country remains one of my favourite and continually evolving pastimes.
My Favourite BC Wine Getaways
- Naramata Bench – a beautiful area with some of my favourite wineries. I wrote about our girl’s getaway in detail on my site.
- Golden Mile Bench and Similkameen Valley – Charles and I spent an unforgettable couples’ weekend here a few years ago. It’s a romantic fall escape I still remember fondly.
- My Own Backyard – we’re lucky to have excellent wineries minutes from home. If you want a place to stay after a day of touring, The Nest at Quails’ Gate is a lovely choice. The Wines of BC website and their Explorer app also list wineries by region and include a “Spend the Night” feature to help you find accommodations at or near wineries.
