8 Smart Ways to Make Healthy Choices When Dining Out

If you prioritize a healthy, real-food approach, dining out can feel intimidating. Instead of enjoying a night without dishes, you may worry about food safety, ingredient quality, excess calories, or how you’ll feel the next day.

Don’t let that steal your pleasure. Eating out doesn’t have to derail your health goals.

As someone with dietary restrictions, I’ve found dining out can be relaxed and enjoyable—even on stressful occasions like a blind date.

You can still eat well and maintain your health while enjoying social time. Shared meals, conversation and laughter are part of a vibrant life. Here are eight practical tips to help you eat healthy when eating out:

1. Check the menu online

Most restaurants post their menus online. Spend a few minutes beforehand to see if the place offers options that fit your needs and to decide what you’ll order. This helps avoid rushed choices or feeling pressured by a server.

2. Eat a small, healthy snack before you go

Arriving overly hungry often leads to overeating. A small apple, banana or handful of nuts steadies your appetite so you can make thoughtful choices without spoiling your meal.

3. Ask them to hold the bread basket

Bread at the table is an easy source of extra carbs and sugar. If it’s not part of your plan, request the basket be withheld to remove temptation before it reaches the table.

4. Order fresh, simple and “naked”

Choose salads, vegetables and dishes with minimal preparation. The more elaborate a dish, the more likely it contains hidden ingredients like gluten, dairy, sugar or refined seed oils. Favor steamed, grilled or simply roasted foods over breaded or heavily sauced preparations.

5. Ask about sauces and dressings

Sauces and dressings are common sources of flour, butter, sugar and inflammatory oils like canola or soybean. Ask for dressings and sauces on the side, or request olive oil and vinegar for salads. When unsure, stick with simple preparations.

6. Be polite and request substitutions

Most restaurants can accommodate changes, especially when a chef is in the kitchen. Explain briefly if you have allergies or sensitivities and thank the server for their help. Courtesy makes special requests easier to fulfill.

7. Watch your beverages

Alcohol and sugary cocktails add calories quickly. One glass of wine is fine for many people; a whole bottle is not. Order wine by the glass if you want to limit intake. Avoid sweet cocktails; choose spirits on the rocks or with soda water (not tonic). Always pair alcoholic drinks with water to stay hydrated.

8. Approach the evening with calm and ease

Dining out is meant to be enjoyable. Perfection isn’t required—if you’ve followed these tips, you’ve done well. If something slips, move on. Your mindset often affects the experience more than the food itself, so choose relaxation, conversation and laughter.
