Instant Pot Chinese Sausage with Rice and Egg Bowl

Make Chinese sausage and egg rice quickly and easily in your Instant Pot. Cooking rice in a pressure cooker is fast and simple, and this flavorful Chinese sausage rice comes together with minimal fuss and cleanup. I prepared this version using an Instant Pot Duo Crisp Plus with the Air Fryer lid, but the method works in most Instant Pot models that have a pressure-cooking function.

If you’ve struggled to get consistent rice in the Instant Pot, this guide will help. I’ll explain the correct water-to-rice ratios and share a straightforward recipe so you can cook perfect rice with Chinese sausage and egg every time.

I often use my Instant Pot instead of a rice cooker because I like the convenience and versatility. I’ve also cooked other rice varieties in the Instant Pot such as jasmine and sushi rice, so it’s a reliable appliance for many rice dishes.

What is Chinese Sausage

Chinese sausage refers to a variety of cured sausages from China, typically made from pork and seasoned in different ways. Some are sweet, some savory, and others can have a spicy kick. They come in different textures and sizes and are used widely across Chinese and Southeast Asian cuisines.

Chinese sausage can be quite dense and firm. Depending on how you want it to turn out in a dish, you can cook it until it is slightly firm or longer to soften it. It’s commonly added to fried rice, noodle dishes, soups, and steamed rice bowls for a punch of flavor.

For fried rice or stir-fry, slice the sausage and cook it briefly in a small amount of oil until it becomes translucent and releases its fat and flavor. For dishes where it will cook with rice, the texture will be firmer unless you give it extra time to soften.

Equipment

Every Instant Pot model is slightly different. I used an Instant Pot Duo Crisp 11-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker with Air Fryer lid (8 quart). My unit does not have a dedicated “Rice” button, so I used the pressure cooker setting. If your model has a rice setting you can use that, but the pressure method here gives reliable results across models.

How long to cook Chinese sausage rice in the Instant Pot

For this recipe I used 1 cup of jasmine rice and 1 1/4 cups of water. I placed the rice and water in the inner pot, added sliced Chinese sausage, minced garlic, soy sauce, and cracked eggs on top, then cooked on high pressure for seven minutes.

The Instant Pot will take a few minutes to build pressure, then the seven-minute cook time begins. After the timer finishes, perform a quick release, remove the lid, and serve. Note that the sausage will remain somewhat firm; if you prefer it softer, add the sausage after cooking and cover the pot for a few minutes to allow gentle warming and softening.

Can you cook rice and meat at the same time in Instant Pot?

Yes — you can cook rice and meat together in the Instant Pot. Many one-pot recipes combine rice with proteins like sausage, chicken, or pork. When cooking meat with rice, consider the cut and thickness of the meat: thin, pre-cooked, or cured meats (like Chinese sausage) do well when placed on top of the rice. Raw or thick cuts of meat may require different timing or pre-cooking to ensure even doneness.

How do you keep rice from getting mushy in Instant Pot?

The key to non-mushy rice is using the correct water-to-rice ratio and the right pressure-cooking time. Rinsing rice before cooking removes excess starch and helps prevent clumping. Also avoid adding too much liquid from sauces; if using soy sauce or other seasonings, count them toward the total liquid used.

What is the ratio of water to rice in an Instant Pot?

  • Jasmine rice: 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cups water; pressure cook 7 minutes on high.
  • Sushi rice: 1 cup rice to 1 1/4 cups water.
  • Brown rice: 1 cup rice to 2 cups water.
  • Bamboo rice: 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cups water.
  • Black rice: 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cups water.

These ratios are guidelines and can be adjusted slightly for personal texture preference or depending on how long the rice is rinsed.

Instant Pot Rice with Sausage and Egg

Make Chinese sausage and egg rice in the Instant Pot. This simple one-pot meal is fast, flavorful, and easy to clean up.

Equipment

  • Instant Pot Duo Crisp Plus (or any Instant Pot with pressure-cook setting)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 4 pieces Chinese sausage, sliced
  • 2 large eggs
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. Place the rinsed rice in the inner pot and add the water.
  2. Arrange sliced Chinese sausage on top, add minced garlic and drizzle the soy sauce over the rice. Crack the eggs on top or nestle them gently among the sausage.
  3. Cover the Instant Pot with the pressure cooker lid and set the valve to sealing.
  4. Select the Pressure Cook function, set to HIGH, and set the timer for 7 minutes.
  5. After the cooking cycle finishes, perform a quick release carefully. Open the lid, fluff the rice gently, and serve hot. If you prefer softer sausage, remove the eggs and sausage after pressure release, return the sausage to the hot rice and cover for several minutes to warm through and soften slightly before serving.
