What is Açaí?

Oi, gente!

Açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-eee) is a tart, dark purple berry from the Amazon that’s been a staple in Brazil and is now enjoyed around the world. In northern Brazil açaí is often used in savory dishes, while in the south it’s commonly enjoyed sweet—most famously in açaí bowls.

Making a Brazilian acai bowl

Açaí na tijela, as Brazilians call it, has long been popular in Rio de Janeiro. One of my favorite memories is eating an icy bowl from a beach kiosk while watching the ocean—perfect after a day in the sun. Outside the beach you’ll find açaí bowls at juice bars, gym cafés, shopping mall food courts—pretty much everywhere in cities nowadays.

Fortunately, making a homemade açaí bowl is easy: all you need is a blender and frozen açaí puree.

How to make Açaí Bowl

Frozen açaí puree is widely available in grocery freezers and online. Açaí on its own is fairly tart, so in Brazil it’s commonly blended with guaraná syrup to add sweetness and character. Some frozen purees are already sweetened with guaraná or sugar; others are unsweetened. Choose whichever fits your taste and dietary needs.

You can use whichever you prefer to make a bowl!

I like my bowls on the sweeter side, so I use a packet already blended with guaraná and add a bit of sugar. You can also sweeten with honey, agave, or skip added sweeteners entirely. Traditional Brazilian bowls are often quite sweet thanks to guaraná syrup, but enjoy however you prefer.

To make a bowl, blend açaí puree with a little water and any sweetener you choose. Spoon into a bowl and top with sliced fruit and granola. It’s that simple. This version—just açaí blended with guaraná and a touch of sugar, topped with banana and vanilla granola—is my favorite.

Bom apetite!

Brazilian Açaí Bowl FAQ

Where to buy açaí puree to make homemade açaí bowls?

Frozen açaí puree and açaí powder are commonly found in grocery stores—especially natural foods markets—and in many big-box retailers. You can also find several brands online. Check the ingredient label if you want unsweetened puree, since some products include added sugar or guaraná syrup.

Is Açaí healthy?

Açaí is a nutrient-dense berry rich in antioxidants, fiber, healthy fats, and micronutrients. As with many foods, how healthy a bowl is depends on added ingredients: some bowls can be high in sugar due to sweetened purees and sugary toppings. If you want a healthier option, choose unsweetened puree, limit added sugar, and top with fresh fruit and a modest amount of granola.
