If you’re looking for an easy, indulgent-tasting treat that’s still good for you, this chocolate fruit dip fits the bill. I often find myself standing in front of the fridge with a spoon, sneaking a bite straight from the bowl. It’s thick, velvety and perfect with fresh fruit.

This dip works for quick snacks, post-lunch sweets, pre-dinner nibbling, or late-night dessert. It’s the kind of recipe I tested a few times until the texture and flavor were just right — and now it’s a regular at my house.

The base is simple and wholesome. Coconut milk provides creaminess and body, unsweetened cocoa powder brings chocolate intensity, maple syrup adds natural sweetness, and vanilla enhances the flavor. The secret to the silky texture is avocado: it creates richness without an overt avocado taste, giving the dip a pudding-like consistency.

About that avocado measurement — 1 ½ ripe avocados is the sweet spot. One avocado leaves the dip a little thin, while two can make it too dense. If you end up with half an avocado leftover, avocado toast is an easy follow-up.

  • ½ cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Add the coconut milk, avocados, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to the bowl of a food processor.
  2. Process until the mixture is completely smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed. It can take a minute or so to reach a silky texture.
  3. Transfer the dip to a lidded container and, if desired, sprinkle the top with cacao nibs or chocolate chips.
  4. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight to chill and firm up slightly.
  5. Serve chilled with fresh fruit for dipping.

Tips and Variations

  • For a more intense chocolate flavor, fold a handful of chocolate chips into the dip before chilling.
  • If you prefer a thinner dip for drizzling, add a little extra coconut milk and blend until smooth.
  • To keep it nut-free and vegan, ensure any chocolate chips used are dairy-free.
