Halloween is almost here, and these DIY spell books are one of my favorite seasonal crafts. Inexpensive, simple to make, and convincingly authentic, they add a touch of elegant, slightly eerie charm to any end table, bookshelf, or mantel. They’re perfect for adults and kids alike, and an excellent way to upcycle worn or damaged hardcover books—so when a beloved hardcover gets torn or stained, don’t despair: it can become a spooky centerpiece.
To make DIY Spell Books you will need:

- 3 hardcover books
- Foam, puffy, or 3D letter stickers for titles
- Hot glue gun and extra glue sticks
- Embellishments (gems, plastic spiders, other decorations)
- Mod Podge
- Paper towels
- Black acrylic paint
- Metallic paint (gold, silver, or bronze)
- Distressing ink or antique ink
- Ribbon or suede cord
Standard supplies
- Paintbrushes or sponge brushes
- Hairdryer (to speed drying)
How long it takes
Many layered Halloween book projects can take days because of drying times, but this method combines steps and uses a hairdryer to speed drying so you can complete a book in about an hour.
How to make DIY Spell Books
1. Start by arranging foam or 3D letter stickers on the cover and spine to create your book titles. Play with fonts and placement until you like the look.

2. Use a hot glue gun to create raised studs, borders, or ornamental patterns, and attach any embellishments that you want to remain solid under the paint. Hot glue works great for mounting gems or small plastic figures.

3. Prepare the paper towel texture: separate paper towel into a single ply and lightly dampen it with a few drops of water—squeeze out any excess so it’s barely damp. Open the book and lay it with the covers facing up. Brush a layer of Mod Podge over the cover, spine, and back, then press small sections of the damp paper towel into place. Make intentional small wrinkles and press the towel around letters and embellishments to create an aged, leather-like texture. Work in small areas until the entire surface is covered. Use a hairdryer to dry for about 5 minutes.

4. Once the texture layer is dry, apply black paint over the entire cover, back, and spine with a sponge brush. Cover thoroughly to unify the surface and hide the original cover design. Dry with a hairdryer for another 5 minutes.

5. After the black paint is dry, use a small bristle brush to highlight lettering, studs, and embellishments with metallic paint. Gold, bronze, or silver work well to create contrast and an antique look.

6. Dry again with a hairdryer. Then use distressing ink along the page edges to give the book an aged, slightly yellowed appearance. Gently bend and crumple the outer pages (carefully, without tearing) to create wear. This step adds character and makes the book look well-used.

7. Finish by adding any final decorations: glue on gems, wrap a ribbon or suede cord around the book, attach a small key or charm, or nestle a plastic spider into the design. Small touches make each book unique.

Now you have a handmade, spookily elegant addition to your Halloween décor!
