This past week I received three new gluten-free products from Franz Bakehouse: hamburger buns and two loaves of bread. All Franz Bakehouse gluten-free items are certified gluten-free and are available in parts of the Northwest—Oregon, Washington, Idaho, western Montana (Billings and west), and Northern California (north of Chico). I found them at local stores including Fred Meyer, Rosauers, and Walmart.

On Friday night we tried the hamburger buns with grilled burgers. We prefer buns lightly toasted, so my husband put them on the grill for a few minutes. The exterior gained a pleasant crunch while the inside stayed soft and chewy. Most importantly, the buns held together — a common problem with many gluten-free burger buns is that they fall apart. These stayed intact and earned a unanimous thumbs up from everyone at the table.

Over the weekend we used both loaves for grilled cheese, breakfast toast, and turkey sandwiches. The slices held together well and were enjoyed by the whole family. The 7-Grain loaf in particular reminded me of a hearty whole-grain deli bread—textured and flavorful enough that many people might not realize it’s gluten-free. That’s a definite win.

The Mountain White is a solid everyday loaf and would make excellent French toast. Like the 7-Grain, it’s pleasant even without toasting, unlike many store-bought gluten-free breads that rely on toasting to improve texture.
