Dad’s Dalgona Coffee recipe showcases the whipped coffee trend that swept the internet during lockdown. Also called whipped coffee, Dalgona became a viral favorite for its dramatic layered look and simple ingredients.

In recent months many people have taken to making this inverted latte-style drink at home. Though its exact origin is debated, the method that gained worldwide popularity is often linked to Korea.

An upside-down latte

Dalgona Coffee is essentially a latte turned upside down. Instead of adding steamed or foamed milk to coffee, you whip the coffee into a thick foam and spoon it over milk. The easiest and most reliable results come from using instant coffee — other methods exist, but instant coffee consistently yields the best, stable foam.

Easier with a mixer

The simplest way to make Dalgona Coffee is with a stand mixer and the whisk attachment. For a single serving, combine 2 tablespoons instant coffee, 2 tablespoons white sugar, and 2 tablespoons boiling water in the mixer bowl. Whisk on high for 3–5 minutes until the mixture becomes thick and holds stiff peaks — when you flip the whisk, the foam should stay in place without dripping.

Other methods

If you don’t have a stand mixer you can still make whipped coffee. A hand mixer will do the job in a few minutes. Whisking by hand is also possible, but it requires more effort and time; patience and strong wrists will get you there.
