I’ve been working on a few simple projects to prepare for Big Bear’s grandmother’s 80th birthday. I’m organizing the party and want it to feel special for such an important milestone.

Last week I finalized a cupcake idea for the celebration — pastel flower cupcakes — and these mini picket fence pots coordinate nicely with that look.

The theme blends beachy, ocean, pastels, butterflies and birds — a lot of elements, but they’re all favorites of the guest of honor, so I’m weaving them together. I spotted a similar idea online that seemed to use a candle inside; inspired by that and a magazine feature that used flowers as favors, I adapted the concept into mini table centerpieces.

Each pot cost about $1.50 to make. I bought a pack of six craft flowers at Lowe’s for around $1.25, a bag of clothespins for $1.00, and the tuna cans were roughly $0.60 each. They’re quick to assemble — about a minute or two each.

Materials:
  • 1 empty, washed tuna can with label and top removed
  • 1–2 potted garden flowers (rooted and blooming)
  • About 20 wooden clothespins
Instructions:
Attach clothespins one at a time around the outside of the tuna can. Push each clothespin down so the rounded edges meet the can and they sit snugly next to each other until the can is completely covered. Remove one or two plants from their container, keeping the roots and soil intact, and place them into the center of the can. The clothespins create a decorative picket-fence effect while the plant fills the center.
