WHAT DOES THE NAME QUINN MEAN?
Quinn has clear Irish roots and began as a surname before becoming a widely used given name.
The name comes from the Irish surname Ó Cuinn, associated with Conn of the Hundred Battles, a legendary High King of Ireland. Many notable Irish leaders are traditionally considered descendants of Conn.
There are two main possibilities for the origin of Conn’s name: conn could mean “wisdom” or “reason,” or it might derive from a title equivalent to “chief.”
Conn is also used as a given name. Although it sounds similar to Connor, Quinn is not directly related to that name. A few names may share roots or simply resemble Quinn in sound.
POP CULTURE QUINN
While Quinn appears throughout Irish legend and history, it has a strong presence in American popular culture as well.
From the late 20th century onward, notable appearances include:
- “The Mighty Quinn,” a 1968 hit by Manfred Mann originally written by Bob Dylan. The song references “Quinn the Eskimo,” a figure thought to be inspired in part by actor Anthony Quinn’s performance in the 1960 film The Savage Innocents.
- Child actress Quinn Cummings, who earned an Oscar nomination for her role as Lucy in the 1977 film The Goodbye Girl.
- Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993–1998), the TV series starring Jane Seymour as a Boston-born 19th-century physician who relocates to Colorado Springs and works to gain the town’s trust.
- The animated MTV series Daria (1997) featured Quinn Morgendorfer, the bubbly, popular sister of the title character.
- Glee (2009) introduced Quinn Fabray, a prominent high-school cheerleader.
- Soap operas have also used the name: Quinn Hudson appeared on Days of Our Lives beginning in 2011, and Quinn Fuller Forrester debuted on The Bold and the Beautiful in 2013.
These are a few memorable cultural uses of the name Quinn.
