Blue Light: Causes, Risks, and How to Protect Your Eyes

What it’s doing to your sleep & health, and a simple way to help.

I had LASIK about 12 years ago, so why am I choosing to wear glasses now? For me they’re a cute accessory and help me get into work mode. But the biggest reason is practical: they block blue light, which can disrupt sleep and, over time, harm your health.

Sleep is when your body rests, repairs, detoxifies and processes the day. It’s essential. Without consistent restorative sleep (ideally 7–9 hours), both physical and mental health suffer. If you’re regularly getting six hours or less, your adrenal system is likely compensating and may eventually become exhausted.

Even people who go to bed at a reasonable hour often struggle to fall or stay asleep. One major contributor to this widespread problem is constant exposure to blue light.

Blue light surrounds us, but the largest sources are screens and bright artificial lights — think phones, tablets, computers, LED bulbs and fluorescent fixtures. Scientific studies show that blue light suppresses melatonin production, the hormone that helps regulate our circadian rhythm and sleep.

At the same time that blue light suppresses melatonin, it increases cortisol production. Cortisol is the hormone that helps us wake up and respond to stress; it should be low at night. When cortisol remains elevated after dark, you’re more likely to lie awake, tossing and turning with a racing mind.

In an ideal world, avoid screens and bright artificial light for at least two hours before bed. Real life, though, often looks different: many of us unwind by scrolling social media or watching shows at night, and others must work late. If you can switch to dim, warm lighting or candlelight after sunset, that’s great. If not, there’s a simple and effective compromise: wear blue-light blocking glasses.

Wearing blue-light blocking glasses after dark, or anytime you spend extended periods on screens, helps protect melatonin production and reduces eye strain and headaches. For many people, they’re an easy step that supports better sleep and overall wellbeing.

I personally love my blue-light blocking glasses and they have made a world of difference in regards to eye fatigue, screen headaches, and getting me a goodnights rest!
