Once you learn how to make it at home, you’ll never go back to store-bought frosting. This recipe yields a light, fluffy frosting with the right level of sweetness—perfect for cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and more.
You only need four simple ingredients: real butter, cream cheese, vanilla (paste or extract), and powdered sugar.
If you can’t find vanilla paste, plain vanilla extract works fine. I prefer the paste because it adds tiny flecks of vanilla bean for a prettier, more flavorful result.

- 16 oz. cream cheese room temperature
- 2 sticks of butter room temperature
- 2 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract
- 2 cups powdered sugar

If the frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
