  • Paint stirring sticks
  • Wood burning / pyrography tool
  • Pencil
  • Light-colored wood stain
  • Paintbrush
  • Lint-free rag
  • Work gloves
  • Face mask

These plant markers can be made from inexpensive paint stirring sticks—often sold in packs for a dollar—making them a budget-friendly choice. If you don’t already own a wood burning tool, they’re affordable and available at craft stores or online. Pick a light, transparent stain so the burned lettering stays easy to read.

✏️ Drawing the template

Start by deciding which vegetables and herbs you’ll plant this season. Using a pencil, write each plant name clearly on a stirring stick. Keep letters large enough to trace easily with the wood burning tool. Pencil lines will be removed by burning, so don’t worry about neatness at this stage.

Tip: If you’ve never used a wood burning tool, reserve an extra stick for practice. Familiarizing yourself with the tool on a scrap piece will make the finished markers look cleaner and more consistent.

🪵 Wood burning

Place your wood burning tool on its stand and allow it to heat fully before starting. These tools reach very high temperatures, so never leave them unattended. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a face mask to avoid inhaling any fumes released during burning.

Trace over the penciled letters slowly, pressing just enough to create a clear, slightly recessed groove in the wood. The goal is to burn a readable groove, not to scorch the surface excessively. If the tool or your hands feel hot, wearing work gloves can make the process more comfortable.

🖌️ Staining

After burning the names, place the sticks on a paper-covered surface and apply a light coat of wood stain to the front and sides using a brush. Wipe away any excess stain with a lint-free rag to avoid pooling and blotches. Allow the front to dry before flipping and staining the back.

Repeat staining as desired until you reach the color and finish you like. Once the markers are completely dry, insert them into your garden beds to label rows and add a handcrafted touch.

We’d love to see your finished markers—please share photos of the ones you make!
