Glow-Boosting Turmeric and Honey Face Mask for Radiant Skin

Turmeric Honey Face Mask — a simple, homemade treatment I’ve used for years. It delivers anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits while brightening and softening skin. See the video below for a quick demonstration.

With warmer weather and more social events, a DIY beauty boost is always welcome. This turmeric and honey mask is an easy at-home option that I was introduced to by a reader about 7–8 years ago and have used ever since.

The treatment is popular in South Asia, where turmeric is traditionally applied before weddings to give the skin a radiant, even-toned look. Combined with raw or Manuka honey, turmeric supports skin health and can help with signs of aging and acne.

Turmeric benefits

Turmeric (pronounced “tur-mur-ick”) offers both internal and external benefits. The active compound, curcumin, has been studied for topical use in a range of skin conditions, including inflammatory disorders and certain precancerous or cancerous skin issues. Turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory and a potent antioxidant, making it a useful ingredient in skincare.

Use raw or Manuka honey

One important tip: use a good quality raw honey or Manuka honey. I once let my daughter use a cheap squeeze honey and she developed a rash and breakouts the next day. Raw and especially Manuka honey have stronger antibacterial and healing properties, and they are gentler and more effective on the skin than highly processed honey.

Raw honey can be used alone as a simple facial treatment to moisturize and improve skin texture. Manuka honey, produced mainly in New Zealand and Australia, has particularly powerful antibacterial effects and is often used for medicinal as well as cosmetic purposes.

What’s the difference between raw and Manuka honey?

Raw honey is minimally processed honey taken directly from the comb and packaged without pasteurization. It may contain natural pollen, propolis, and small amounts of wax, and retains more natural enzymes and antioxidants than processed honey.

Manuka honey comes from bees that pollinate the Manuka bush and is prized for its unique antibacterial activity. It is commonly used both topically and internally for its therapeutic benefits.

My best tips

I find the mask works better the longer it stays on — I sometimes leave it on for up to an hour. It’s best applied at night, as turmeric will temporarily tint the skin yellow. This discoloration fades and won’t be permanent, but turmeric can stain clothing, so protect fabrics and use a washcloth.

To remove the mask, rinse thoroughly with warm water and a washcloth; if needed, use a little baking soda to help lift the color. The turmeric will wash away from the skin with gentle cleansing.
