Use melted chocolate to create these fun edible Halloween cupcake toppers—perfect for decorating cupcakes for parties, classroom treats, or last-minute gatherings. In this post you’ll learn a simple method to make chocolate cupcake toppers using a printable template.

As a designer, I tend to approach food crafts with an eye for detail. While premade edible cupcake toppers from the store are convenient, I often want to tweak the font, size, or color to match my vision. Seeing packaged toppers priced at several dollars a pack makes me think, “I can make that.”
This project began after a trip to a craft store inspired me to create my own cupcake toppers using a favorite handwritten font. By piping melted chocolate over a printable lettering template, you can make elegant and playful Halloween cupcake toppers in minutes.
What you need to make edible Halloween cupcake toppers
- Melted chocolate (melting wafers or compound chocolate work well)
- Printable BOO & EEK lettering template (print at the size you want your toppers)
- Piping bag or a small plastic bag with the corner snipped
- Wax paper or parchment
- Your favorite cupcakes or cookies for topping

How to make edible Halloween cupcake toppers
Step 1: Melt chocolate and pipe
Melt chocolate according to package directions and transfer it to a piping bag or a small resealable plastic bag with one corner cut off. Place the printed lettering template under a sheet of wax paper or parchment. Use the printable as a guide and carefully pipe the melted chocolate to trace each letter. Work steadily so the lines are smooth and consistent.
Tip: Melting wafers or compound chocolate often melt more smoothly and harden faster than standard chocolate chips, which can scorch if overheated.

Step 2: Cool, remove, and place on treats
Let the piped letters cool and harden completely before attempting to remove them from the wax paper. Once fully set, gently peel the wax paper away and place the chocolate letters on top of frosted cupcakes or cookies. Make extra letters—some may break during removal, and the extras ensure you have enough for each treat.
Tip: These toppers look great on doctored cake mix cupcakes, store-bought cupcakes, or on sugar cookies with buttercream frosting.

Besides using the provided template, you can print your own custom words or shapes to match your party theme. Adjust font size and spacing on the template to create larger or smaller toppers.
