Easy Homemade BBQ Sauce. Rich, smoky, sweet, and tangy—this ketchup-based barbecue sauce combines molasses, brown sugar, sweet red onion, apple cider vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire, and a few pantry spices. It’s gently simmered until thick and full of flavor. So good you’ll want to slather it on everything or eat it straight from the spoon.

Stop focusing on how stressed you are and remember how BLESSED you are ~ Unknown
I lived in Kansas City for a year (2018) and developed a deep appreciation for classic barbecue—especially the ribs. This recipe was inspired by those bold flavors but kept slightly chunkier to preserve the texture of sautéed onions. It remains a family favorite and is easy enough to make on weeknights or for a weekend cookout.
How to Make Homemade BBQ Sauce
This sauce is straightforward and forgiving. Adjust seasonings to suit your taste: blend it smooth if you don’t like onion bits, increase chili powder or hot sauce for more heat, and remember the sautéed onions add depth—don’t skip them if you can help it.
- Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add 1/2 cup chopped red onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes.
- Transfer the onions to a medium saucepan and add:
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup molasses (use good-quality molasses)
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke (use sparingly)
- Stir the mixture and bring it to a boil over high heat.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer 20–35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your liking.

Tips for the Best BBQ Sauce
- Simmer to your preference: Longer simmering concentrates flavor and thickens the sauce. Shorten the time for a thinner sauce.
- Smooth it out: For a silky texture, blend the finished sauce with an immersion blender or in a countertop blender.
- Let it rest: Refrigerate the sauce for a day before using to let the flavors meld.
- Go easy on liquid smoke: It can overpower quickly—start with a small amount (about 1/4 teaspoon) and taste before adding more.
- Storage: Keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Ways to Use This Sauce
This BBQ sauce is versatile. Try it on:
- BBQ chicken sliders
- Burgers or meatloaf
- Grilled ribs, drumsticks, or wings
- Baked beans or stirred into mac and cheese
It’s a sauce that brings summer flavor year-round. I use it whenever I want bold, tangy, slightly sweet barbecue notes.
